Solar Thermal Operating Costs - Solar Thermal O&M Expenses
There are significant operating costs involved with solar thermal technology.Unlike solar PV which is a passive electricity generation technology, solar thermal technology requires heating of water, and running of turbines to generate the electricity, leading to higher operational costs.
An approximate operational cost estimate for solar thermal is about 3 cents per KWh of electricity generated.

Solar hot water is actually looking more and more cost effective, as fossil fuel prices continue to rise. Here in the UK companies such as SolarUK have seen plenty of enquiries from potential customers, despite difficult economic conditions, who are aware that a well-designed system (such as the LaZer2) can provide 50% to 70% of a household's hot water needs, often rising to 100% during the warmest months of the year (these percentages apply to the UK).
The industry is working closely with the Government, which it hopes to help develop a policy framework enabling the country to achieve the target of 15% renewable energy by 2020.
