Biorefineries vs Petro refineries in the US
16 billion gallons of cellulosic ethanol in the U.S. transportation fuel mix by 2022. To get there, the industry would need to build 444 refineries the size of the BP-Verenium collaboration. These biofuels refineries can?t get too big because then they would outgrow their feedstock supply. To put that in perspective, there are fewer than 150 fossil fuel refineries in the U.S. - Read More

Cost of BP Verenuim Biofuels Facility
The BP-Verenium facility will cost between $250 million and $300 million to build and create 140 fulltime jobs in the refinery and farm. That?s pretty pricey ? about $7 to $8 to build each gallon of capacity, more than three times the cost of ethanol refineries. It will also take 20,000 acres to grow enough plants to turn out 36 million gallons of ethanol. - Read More

590 mill wet tons of biomass in the US
"The Energy Information Administration?s estimation of biomass resources shows that there are 590 million wet tons of biomass available in the United States on an annual basis"...now, this is a bit confusing...I also read that the world has 1250 billion T of biomass...that is over 2000 times that of what is given here...perhaps that figure also includes all biomass available at sea? even then, 2000 times what is available in the US?

Biomass usage in USA
Biomass has played a relatively small role in terms of the overall U.S. energy picture, supplying 3.2 quadrillion Btu of energy out of a total of 98.5 quadrillion Btu in 2000.7 The vast majority of it is used in the pulp and paper industries, where residues from production processes are combusted to produce steam and electricity. The industrial cogeneration sector consumed almost 2.0 quadrillion Btu of biomass in 2000 - Read More

1st stage if Un of Nevada algae project a success
Researchers at U of Nevada-Reno hv been testing outdoor algae ponds (open ponds). The 1st phase was a success with algae growing in a pair of 5,000 gallon ponds even with overnight temperatures in the 20s. Prof John Cushman has been collaborating with Enegis, LLC and Bebout and Associates. The 1st batch of algae grew from a "starter" culture to a stable equilibrium in less than 3 weeks. The team moving fwd with developing species that can thrive in the salty water of the region. - Read More

Biomass can supply 65% of US fuels?
The Economist (Jun 2008) reports that acc to a study by the US dept of energy & agri, with only small changes to existing practice, 1.3 billion T of plant matter could be collected from US soil without affecting food production. If these were converted to ethanol, it would add up to 350 billion liters of petrol - 65% of US consumption

US far short of grass-based biofuel refineries needed for 2022 federal standard
It may be one of the biggest green gambles of the century: a national goal of converting wood, grass, corn stalks and garbage into 16 billion gallons of cellulosic biofuels annually by 2022. No commercial-scale refineries exist, researchers have yet to agree on the best technology for fuel conversion and there is no distribution network to handle fuel once it is made. - Read More

Camelina - a good biofuel feedstock?
Here’s the lowdown on camelina. First, it grows on land unsuitable for food crops. It has yields that are roughly double that of soy. The oil it produces is more cold-resistant than the average biodiesel feedstock. It tolerates cold climates well - it has been grown for years in pockets of Montana. It’s supported by research and field trials at a number of land-grant colleges around the country - Oregon State, Montana State, Idaho among them. It grows wild in the US - Read More
