Short Rotation Coppice and Biofuels
In Europe, many countries practice Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) management of forests to maximize yields. Most managed woodlands in upper mid-west are pine for its pulp--taking 20-30 years to reach harvest size. But in a SRC system, fast growing deciduous softwoods are grown rather than coniferous trees allowing harvest to take place in as few as 3 years. This allows a significant increase in tonnage/year -as high as 20,000 lbs. annually on an acre of willow - Read More
