India produces 540 million tones of crop & plant residues per annum
India produces 540 million tonnes of crop and plantation residues every year, a large portion of which is either wasted or used inefficiently. Estimates show that even with the present use of these residues and by using only the surplus biomass materials, estimated at 150 million tonnes, about 17,000MW of distributed power could be generated, which is almost 15 per cent of existing installed power capacity. - Read More

Crop Biodiversity Could Reduce Nitrogen Runoff
Research fm Louisiana State University shows planting strategies that include a diverse range of crops is a technique that could lower nitrogen runoff. Where biodiversity of crops is high, there is less dissolved N found in surrounding watersheds that eventually make it to ocean. N from agriculture fertilizers winds up increasing the local aquatic dissolved nitrate. The increased nitrate leads to the growth of algae, which uses up the available oxygen in the water, creating dead zones. - Read More
