Commercial shipping emits as much particulates as cars
Globally, commercial ships emit almost half as much particulate matter pollutants into the air as the total amount released by the world?s cars, according to a new study led by NOAA and the University of Colorado at Boulder. Ship pollutants affect local air quality and the health of people living along coastlines. The findings appeared online 25 February in the Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres, a publication of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). - Read More

Using syngas to produce electricity is less polluting
Syngas can be combusted in a combined cycle turbine to produce electricity. Because impurities can be removed from the syngas (both CO2 and sulfur) before combusting the emissions from such power produced is far less than those from normal power plants

Cement industry can cut 90% of its emissions
The global cement industry can avoid up to 90% of emissions projected under a frozen technology scenario, according to a new WWF report. The report finds reduction potentials through a more efficient use of cement and by increasing the amount of additives and substitutes. Large energy efficiency potentials have been found both to conserve thermal and electrical energy in the production process. - Read More

FutureGen, SaskPower - Near Emission-free Coal Plant Technology
FutureGen is the Bush administration's much promoted effort to build the first commercial-scale near-emission-free coal power technology. Announced in 2003, the public-private project has yet to find a site to build the plant. SaskPower, a government power utility in Canada, could beat FutureGen as the world's first near-emission-free coal power plant. The 300-megawatt plant could begin construction as early as this year. (2008) - Read More

Rich nations' greenhouse gases fell in 2006: survey
Reuters survey shows that Turkey's emissions have risen most since 1990 among industrialized nations, by 95 percent. Latvia's are down furthest, by 56 percent. Global Carbon Project of leading experts said that world emissions of carbon dioxide were growing four times faster since 2000 than in the 1990s. The surge was led by developing nations, which do not report to the United Nations. The rich countries emissions growth are almost zero - Read More
