Iceland is world leader in geothermal energy

Icelanders are world leaders in the use of geothermal energy. Some 87% of population enjoy central heating by geothermal energy at a price that is generally less than half of the comparable cost of oil or electric heating. Geothermal steam has been used directly for industrial processing applications in Iceland for decades, and has also been developed for electricity generation on a small but growing scale. Today, total installed geothermal electric power is 422MW, and expected to be 482MW.
