Jatropha real life problems faced by Indian companies
Model farm in Vyasa district of Gujarat is reporting yields of only 200 grams of jatropha oil per plant. Aditya Aromatics is reporting that cultivation costs for jatropha oil are $7.67 per gallon compared to a conventional diesel cost of $2.60 per gallon. The two groups say that their tests have been on poor soils with no fertilizer; on a plot of land where fertilizer has been applied by the Vyasa model farm, the plants are yielding 4 kilos per plant.

SBI gives loans for jatropha
Recently, the State Bank of India provided a boost to the cultivation of Jatropha in India by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with D1 Mohan, a joint venture of D1 Oils plc, to give loans to the tune of 1.3 billion rupees to local farmers in India. Viridas drives ahead with jatropha biodiesel in Brazil
Viridas, the Alternative Investment Market-listed company, is moving forward with plans to establish a "base plantation" in Brazil as it looks to develop its strategy of producing biofuels. The Leeds-based company is to use the South American location as a central area to grow jatropha trees which it hopes will form the next generation of alternative fuel stock.

Uganda getting on to Jatropha bandwagon
A local company Africa Power Initiative (API) is in advanced stages of producing 60,000 litters a day from locally grown jatropha and other oil seeds in Uganda's north-eastern region of Karamoja. The project fully integrates the local community, was kick-started in April 2008, and is the brainchild of a API in partnership with American and local investors.
