Ultimately recoverable natural gas from conventional sources could be around 400 tcm. Non-conventional resources - coalbed methane, tight gas sands and gas shales are over 900 tcm, with 25% in the US and Canada cmobined! (IEA, 2008)

Like oil, while proven natural gas resources globally are around 180 tcm (60 years of supply - IEA, 2007), they are concentrated in a few countries and regions - Russia, Iram and Qatar hold 56% of world's reserves, while just 25 fields worldwide hold around half the reserves!
