Using gasification for oil sands

Getting oil from oil sands is an energy intensive process with steam and hydrogen required for mining and refining of oil sands to get crude oil. There are a lot of residuals from these processes and one of them is called Petcoke. Now, companies are trying to use petcoke in gasifiers to produce syngas and then hydrogen and steam, instead of using expensive natural gas as was done earlier.
