Does photobioreactors overheat?
I read somewhere that overheating could be a problem with photobioreactors, so they will need to be cooled. Is this true?

Photobioreactors are a bad idea? - Richard Sayre
Harvesting algae in photobioreactors, says Dr. Sayre, diminish the economic viability of algae, and he sees the best methods for harvesting, not surprisingly, as the simplest – such as using simple paddle wheels in open ponds or devising a means of “milking” the oil from algae, leaving the organism intact. - Read More

Atlanta firm to develop Ohio University algae bioreactor
(Oct 2008) Atlanta firm Green Bios Technologies has licensed a new type of algae bioreactor from Ohio University developed by internationally renowned engineering professor David Bayless. The company plans to develop the reactor for customers interested in its diverse potential applications, which include curbing air pollution, treating municipal waste, carbon sequestration and growing feedstock for biofuel or pharmaceutical uses. - Read More

originOil's Helix Bioreactor
(Oct 2008) Origin Oil Inc. has developed an internally illuminated bioreactor, called the Helix Bioreactor. Chief Executive Officer Riggs Eckelberry said the LED-lit bioreactors provide algae with only the wavelengths of light needed to stimulate growth.

Scaling a photobioreactor is difficult
One of the challenges of bioreactors is scaling them up. The NREL’s Aquatic Species Program focused on the development of large ponds as a more feasible approach. Simmons adds that most commercial algae producers now grow their crops on open ponds. “There is no economically viable method to growing them [algae] to the scales you need in a photo bioreactor yet,” he says. Bioreactor Tech
Simmons observes that firms such as GreenFuel have developed bioreactors—sealed growth chambers—and that Japan has spent nearly $250 million to optimize bioreactor technology. However, the process still is not mature enough for large-scale commercial use. - Read More
