1999 and 2000 saw super major energy companies - BP merged with Amoco and Arco; Exxon Mobil; Total with Elf; Chevron with Texaco; These mergers put them on level field with state-owned companies - Saudi Aramco, Petroleos de Venezuela, Iran's NIOC, Mexico's Pemex (The former is downstream, latter is upstream)
