Wastewater to electricity in Houston

Houston-based MaxWest Environmental Systems is developing a wastewater treatment plant which when developed will be able to convert wastewater sludge into renewable energy. The plant will be able to process 100,000 tons of combined horse manure, stall and wood waste into 10.5 megawatts of electricity annually. (May 2009)

Poor wastewater treatment in India leads to drug infected waterways

According to a report, certain waterways in India were found with drug levels 150 times higher than the highest levels found in the US. Ciprofloxacin was only part of the pharmaceutical soup. Algae to grow on wastewater from carpet mfg in Georgia

The University of Georgia Biorefining and Carbon Cycling Program is examining whether wastewater from the carpet manufacturing industry can be leveraged to grow oil-producing algae. The carpet industry in Dalton, Ga., a city dubbed “The Carpet Capital of the World,” produces 30 million to 35 million gallons of wastewater daily.
